How do I score without the Scoring Service (Especially High School levels)?

Grading worksheets and lower-grade writing assignments is fairly easy. A key is provided. Grading "papers" (as teachers would say) can be a bit subjective. A checklist is included to use with extensive writing assignments for Grades 1-6. Grades 7-8 include a checklist and/or rubric to use for grading. High school courses include a checklist and/or rubric to use for grading. “Samples” are also provided in the Answer Key for you to use as a comparison.

How do I log into the Scoring Service?

You should have received an email containing your login credentials shortly after purchasing. You will use the username and password from that email to log into the member's site. This is done through the "User Login" button at the top of our website. Once you have logged into your dashboard, you will click the "Gradient" logo, or click the "Scoring" tab at the top of the page. From there, you will either set up or enter your student's Scoring profile.

How do I know who my child's Scorer is?

You will find your Scorer's name within your student's Scoring profile. Once your student receives feedback for their first submission, they will see their Scorer's name. Before then, your student can reach out to the Scorer directly by selecting the "Contact Grader" button within any assignment slot.

How do I know when a composition has been graded?

An email notification will be sent to the email address associated with the Essentials in Writing account. Otherwise, your student will log into their Scoring profile in Gradient to check on their submission.

How do I convert my Word Document and Google Docs into a PDF?

Does the Scoring Service sell out?

Yes. It's important to note that the Scoring Service sells out quickly. We encourage you to make your decision soon to secure access for your student.

Does a student have to submit assignments in a particular order?

No. Students can submit whatever assignments they wish, in whatever order they wish. However, we do encourage students to submit the paragraph compositions before the longer compositions, such as the essays.

Do I have to submit by the June 15th deadline?

Yes. Submissions will not be accepted after June 15th. Your Scorer will have 10 days to return your scored assignment to you after you submit.

Can multiple students use the same email address for the Scoring Services?

Yes. Students will have individual profiles within a single account attached to the email address used when placing the order for Scoring Services.

Can I upload Word Documents and Google Docs?

No. All submissions for Levels 7-12 must be typed and submitted as a PDF document.

Can I email a photo of my student's submission?

All compositions for the Scoring Service must be submitted through Gradient. Photos uploaded in a PDF document of the student's handwritten work are only accepted for Level 6. All submissions for Levels 7-12 must be typed and properly formatted, prior to being submitted as a PDF document. Can I contact my student's Scorer?

Yes! Within your student's Scoring profile, you can click on any assignment slot to expand it. Below the assignment rubric, you will click the button that says "Contact Grader."

Can a student submit more than one assignment at a time?

No. Students must wait to submit a new assignment until the previous submission has been scored.

Can a student sign up for two levels of Scoring for one school year?

Essentials in Writing Levels are designed to be completed within one academic school year. However, if a student desires to complete one level per semester instead, two levels of Scoring may be purchased for the academic year before the Scoring Services close for purchasing (10/15) or are sold out. (Mid-year purchases are not possible.) For example: A student wants to complete EIW Level 8 and EIW Level 9 within one academic school year. Are there due dates for each submission?

Your student can submit compositions in any order, on any schedule. They are free to submit compositions for any of the eligible assignments, but they must be submitted before June 15th.

Are the students able to resubmit compositions?

Students may only submit one composition per assignment slot. Graded submissions cannot be turned back in for a new score.
